2026년 여름, 영월은 다시 사진의 시간으로 들어섭니다.
동강의 수려한 자연과 오래된 삶의 풍경, 그리고 사진을 사랑하는 이들의 발걸음이 만나는 이곳에서 제24회 동강국제사진제가 여러분을 맞이합니다.
동강국제사진제는 지난 24년 넘게 한국 사진 예술의 중요한 흐름을 기록하고, 동시대 사진의 새로운 가능성을 제시해 오며, 대한민국을 대표하는 국제 사진 축제로 자리매김하였습니다. 사진제를 처음 준비하던 시절부터 오늘에 이르기까지, 우리는 사진이 단순히 이미지를 보여주는 예술을 넘어 한 시대의 감각과 기억,
사람과 장소의 관계를 다시 묻는 깊은 영상언어임을 믿어 왔습니다. 그 믿음이 오늘의 동강국제사진제를 만들었고, ‘청정 영월’을 한국 사진 문화예술의 특별한 공간으로 성장시켜 왔습니다.
올해 동강국제사진제는 2026년 7월 17일부터 10월 11일까지 동강사진박물관, 예술창작스튜디오, 영월문화예술회관, 영월 시내 일원에서 87일간 펼쳐집니다. 국제주제전, 동강사진상 수상자전, 국제공모전, 보도사진가전, 강원특별자치도 사진가전, 거리설치전, 영월 군민 사진전, 영월 스토리텔링 사진전, 대학생
포트폴리오 전시와 전국 초등학교 사진일기 공모전 등은 사진의 예술적 성취와 기록적 가치, 그리고 지역과 공동체가 함께 만들어 가는 사진 문화의 의미를 다채롭게 보여줄 것입니다. 특히 올해의 핵심 전시인 국제 주제전 〈Horizontal Dialogue: Between Us〉는 아프리카와 한국 사진이 서로를 대상화 하지 않고, 동등한 위치에서 마주하는 ‘수평적 대화’를 제안합니다. 아프리카 사진의 역사와 동시대적 흐름, 그리고 한국 사진의 분단과 풍경, 기억의 문제의식이 한자리에서 만납니다. 사진은 여기서 단순한 기록을 넘어, 사회와 역사, 권력과 기억을 사유하는 깊은 언어가 됩니다. 서로 다른 대륙과 시간이 사진을 통해 어떻게 공명하는지, 관람객 여러분께서도 그 섬세한 대화 속으로 함께 들어오시기를 바랍니다.
동강국제사진제의 힘은 언제나 영월이라는 아름다운 공간과 함께해 왔습니다. 동강사진박물관 안의 전시 뿐 아니라 거리와 광장, 군민의 삶, 청소년과 대학생의 시선, 가족의 기억까지 사진제의 일부가 됩니다. 이는 동강국제사진제가 지닌 가장 소중한 가치입니다. 사진은 우리 곁의 세계를 다시 보게 하고, 익숙한 장소

Yeongwol: Deep Reflection, Warm Vision — Through the Lens of Photography
In the summer of 2026, Yeongwol enters once again into the season of photography. Here, where the natural beauty of the Donggang River meets the scenery of a long-lived life and the footsteps of those who love photography, the 24th DongGang International Photo Festival awaits you. For more than twenty-four years, the DongGang International Photo Festival has charted the significant currents of Korean photographic art and opened new possibilities for contemporary photography, establishing itself as Korea’s most prominent international photography festival. From the earliest days of its founding to the present, we have held to a single conviction: that photography is far more than an art of showing images — it is a profound visual language that captures the sensibility and memory of an era, and keeps asking what connects people to places. That conviction built the DongGang International Photo Festival, and it has made Yeongwol a singular space in the cultural landscape of Korean photography.
This year’s festival runs for 87 days, from July 17 to October 11, 2026, across the DongGang Museum of Photography, the Artist Creation Studio, Yeongwol Culture Arts Center, and venues throughout downtown Yeongwol. The program encompasses the Main International Exhibition, the DongGang Photography Award Exhibition, the International Open Call Exhibition, the Photojournalists Exhibition, the Gangwon State Photographers Exhibition, the Street Installation Exhibition, the Yeongwol County Photographers Exhibition, the Yeongwol Storytelling Photography Exhibition, the University Student Portfolio Exhibition, and the National Elementary School Photo Diary Competition — together illuminating the artistic achievements and documentary value of photography, and the meaning of a photographic culture built in collaboration between artists, local communities, and audiences. At the heart of this year’s festival is the Main International Exhibition, <Horizontal Dialogue: Between Us> a proposal for an encounter between African and Korean photography on equal terms, where neither is made the object of the other’s gaze. The histories and contemporary currents of African photography meet the questions that Korean photography brings to division, landscape, and memory. Here, photography becomes something more than documentation — a language through which we think about society, history, power, and memory. We invite you to step into that subtle dialogue and discover how different continents and different times resonate with one another through the photographic image.
The strength of the DongGang International Photo Festival has always been inseparable from Yeongwol’s scenic beauty itself. The festival extends far beyond the galleries of the DongGang Museum of Photography — the streets and public squares, the daily lives of local residents, the perspectives of young people and university students, the memories held within families: all of these become part of the festival. This is the most precious value the DongGang International Photo Festival holds. Photography allows us to see the world around us anew, and to find new questions inside the places we thought we already knew. This summer, we warmly invite you to Yeongwol — to encounter the deep reflection and warm gaze that photography offers.
